Client: Casino Rail Freight Terminal Pty Ltd (CRFT)
LGA: Richmond Valley, NSW
Everick were commissioned by Casino Rail Freight Terminal Pty Ltd to undertake a cultural heritage assessment ahead of a Development Application for the proposed Casino Rail Freight Terminal at Casino, NSW. An original assessment conducted in 2009 located five scarred trees and found that the Project Area did contain a ridge crest with potential to contain subsurface Aboriginal heritage. Subsequent work commencing in 2014 included:

  • extensive Aboriginal Stakeholder consultation in accordance with the Office of Environment and Heritage Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Consultation Requirements for Proponents (2010);
  • preparation of an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage assessment in accordance with the Office of Environment and Heritage Code of Practice for the Investigation of Aboriginal Objects in NSW (2010);
  • two (2) archaeological test excavation programs conducted in accordance with the Code of Practice for the Investigation of Aboriginal Objects in NSW (2010) and a subsequent an archaeological salvage program;
  • preparation of an Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit.

The excavation results provided further clarification on the distribution of artefacts and confirmed that the Project Area is situated within a greater, significant cultural landscape known to the Aboriginal people of the Richmond Valley region.
