North Stradbroke and Bay Islands Part 6 Studies

Project Type: Technical Advisor, Part 6 Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Studies
Client: Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation
LGA: Redland City, QLD
As the nominated Technical Advisor to the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC), Everick have been working on a number of assessments on North Stradbroke and the Bay Islands. The assessments have been structured to meet the requirements for a Part 6 Heritage Study under the Aboriginal Cultural heritage Act (2003) (ACHA). Part 6 Studies, if accepted for registration by the Department of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Partnerships (DATSIP) for registration, afford certain protections and future management requirements to the lands to which the studies relates.

Only three Part 6 Studies are currently registered with DATSIP. QYAC, in conjunction with Everick, have more than ten Studies nearing completion. This represents possibly the largest body of cultural research undertaken in Queensland over the past decade. The Part 6 Studies Everick and QYAC have completed to date involved:

  • archaeological surveys;
  • test excavations;
  • site recording;
  • spatial data mapping and database management; and
  • community engagement.

Most importantly, the research conducted as part of these studies has assist QYAC in documenting their heritage and encouraging further interaction with heritage through electronic mediums. The works are currently ongoing, but Everick anticipate submitting a number of studies to DATSIP for review by late 2015.
