The Project
Everick Heritage prepared Built Heritage and Historic and Aboriginal Archaeology reports to facilitate approvals for the construction of a new high school on the site. Comprehensive heritage assessments were undertaken to evaluate the significance of the original school buildings, while archaeological assessments and test excavations were conducted to determine the site's archaeological potential. Lastly, a Photographic Archival Recording was prepared to document the original school site before works began.
The original school buildings, constructed in 1947, are an example of the early application of modernist architectural principles in public infrastructure by the NSW Government Architect, Cobden Parks, and his colleague E.H. Rembert, Senior Design Architect of the Department of Public Works.
The test excavations uncovered a late nineteenth century cistern that had been filled in with refuse shortly before the school’s construction in 1947. The cistern contained a range of artefacts, including bottles, cookware and newspapers.
